Always under Construction - last update June 12, 2005

Recent additions:

Not all of the links have been set up yet, and I still need to type in much of the information from the data sheets. Eventually, I'll have notes for every model listed that will help identify it, and links to any web sites or images that I find. If you have a web site or photos of any of these models, please email me with either a URL or attached image file.  If you send a photo, please state a preference for photo credits, eg. your real name, or email address, or web site URL.

The NostalgiaAir schematics are fairly large B&W gif images, scanned at about 300 dpi - not fine enough to read all of the values. For higher quality copies, you may order data sheets for individual models to be snail-mailed from JustRadios. Currently (Fall, 2002) they are priced at Cdn$7.00/US$5.00 for each schematic. You may also see if eBay seller "oidar" currently has a CD-ROM for auction, titled "Canadian Radios on CD, RCC & MYE, 1927-52" (which only runs on MS Windows or a Windows emulator). This list is based on data found on an earlier version of that CD-ROM.

Series Titles - New models were typically introduced late in the year before their official model year. For instance, a 1947 model would have been on the market by late 1946, in time for holiday season shopping. In most cases, the years in the series' titles are a combination of the model year and the actual year they were introduced, which explains the apparent overlaps.

Between 1943 and 1945, production of consumer radios by Northern Electric was suspended, giving priority to Defense production during World War II.

There are also Northern Electric models that were produced prior to 1927, which do not appear in this index. (Eg models R4, R12.)

Some model names were used over several years, for sets which bore very little resemblance to each other

data sheet Northern Electric-8 says:
"Model- 40    1933

uses same circuit as Westinghouse model- 43.
See data sheet Westinghouse-18"
That data sheet is in the 1933-34 series, under Westinghouse.

80, 80-A 6 1932-33
tube types: Osc. - 56; 1st Det. - 58; 1st IF - 58; 2nd IF - 58; 2nd Det. and AVC - 55; AF (push-pull operation) - 2@ 245; Rect. - 280
Has two speakers.

The 25 cycle version has 4 filter caps (three 8 uF, one 4 uF) vs. 2 caps (8 uF) for 60 cycle. This is probably the main difference between the 80 and 80-A models. Data sheet does not indicate which is which.

NostalgiaAir's RCC schematic
101, 101A 7 1932-33
Bands: (1) 540 - 1600 kHz; (2) 1.5 - 3.6 MHz; (3) 3.3 - 9 MHz; (4) 8 - 20 MHz.
10 tubes, types: Osc. - 56; 1st Det. 58; 1st IF - 58; 2nd IF - 58; 3rd IF - 58; 2nd Det. - 56; AF - 56; Output (push-pull operation) - 2@ 245; Rect. - 280
Has two speakers.
One version has 4 filter caps (three 8 uF, one 4 uF) vs. 2 caps (8 uF) for the other version. This is probably the main difference between the 120 and 120-A models. Data sheet does not indicate which is which, but I suspect that the 2-cap version is the 120 model, probably for 60 cycles; and that the 4-cap version is the 120A, for 25 cycles.
NostalgiaAir's RCC schematic
120, 120A 8 1932-33
12 tubes,  types: 1st RF - [58 ?]-  Osc. - 56; 1st Det. - 58; 1st IF - 58; 2nd IF - 58; 2nd Det. - 58; Relay - 57; AF - 56; Driver - 46; Output (push-pull operation) - 2@ 46; Rect. - 82
Has two speakers.
Schematic shows alternate versions with 6 or 10 filter caps. Probably the "A" version has more caps, for 25 cycle operation.
AC line has a 2A fuse. Position of fuse selects either 110V or 120V tap on primary of power transformer.

Excerpt from data sheet 19:
Special Note
In the Model 503-N (serial Nos. 2301 to 2350) a departure from standard assembly as compared to the Model 502-N was made. A variable tone control is used instead of the fixed tone control supplied with the model 502-N. This means that there are then four controls on the Model 503-N having these serial numbers as compared to three on the model 502-N. the lower left hand knob is the tone control referred to above.

Three knobs, dark brown on the bare bakelite models, white knobs on the painted models.
- JR's 5002
5004 93 Radio-Phono set, with chassis, dial, and (3) knobs similar to a model 5000.
60 Hz AC only on models 5004A, 5004AL; 25 Hz AC only on models 5004B and 5004BL. Those restrictions are due to the turntable motor. Without the motor, it could be used like a standard AC/DC radio.
My 5004, however, says "Cycles: Universal 25 - 60".
Internal loop antenna, with terminal for external antenna. Mine happened to come with an external hank antenna.
Cabinet: wood covered with woodgrain-style "photo-finish". It looks like they took a 5000 chassis and put it in a larger wooden cabinet with a top that flips up to reveal the turntable.
5 tubes, types: Converter - 12SA7; IF Amp - 12SK7; 2nd Detector, AVC , 1st AF  Amp - 12SQ7; Output Amp - 35L6GT; Rectifier - 35Z5GT
- JR's 5004
5108 94 AC model, with a phono input jack and AC receptacle. (Without the AC receptacle, it would be a standard AC/DC set.).
3 knobs:  on/off/volume; radio/phono select; and tuning.
The picture of the chassis leads me to believe that it is a Baby Champ with a rainbow cabinet.
5 tubes, types: Converter - 12SA7; IF Amp - 12SK7; 2nd Detector, AVC , 1st AF  Amp - 12SQ7; Output Amp - 50L6GT; Rectifier - 35Z5GT

5110 (Baby Champ) 101 "Rainbow", with arch dial graphics.
One-armed dial pointer pivots slightly below centre of dial face.
5 tubes, types: Converter - 12SA7; IF Amp - 12SK7; 2nd Detector, AVC , 1st AF  Amp - 12SQ7; Output Amp - 50L6GT; Rectifier - 35Z5GT
Original sale price: $37.25 Cdn (tax included)
- JR's 5110
5110 (Deluxe - Baby Champ)   "Rainbow", with arch dial graphics.
One-armed dial pointer pivots slightly below centre of dial face.
"Deluxe" model is not mentioned in the index of data sheets, nor in the data sheets themselves.
The "Deluxe" feature is a high/low tone switch, operated by the third (middle) knob.
5 tubes, types: Converter - 12SA7; IF Amp - 12SK7; 2nd Detector, AVC , 1st AF  Amp - 12SQ7; Output Amp - 50L6GT; Rectifier - 35Z5GT
- JR's 5110 Deluxe
5114  94 I don't know what this one looks like, but the chassis photo looks a lot like that of a Baby Champ.
See notes for model 5108. There is nothing on data sheet 94 to indicate any difference between the 5114 and the 5108, except that it says "schematic diagram model 5108", which suggests that the difference is in the schematic, possibly something like not having an AC receptacle.

Parts list for above 102
7001 95 I don't know what this one looks like.
AC model. Features 12 round pushbuttons, in two rows of 6.
The top row of buttons are for selection of:
1 - Phonograph; 2 - Manual Tuning; 3 - Pushbutton Tuning; 4 - B.C. Band; 5 - SW 1 (11.5 to 23 MHz); 6 - SW 2 (5.8 to 12 MHz)
The lower six buttons are for pre-set stations.
A note on data sheet 95 says: "Before shipping, Preset Push Button Circuits are tuned to 600 kc-s, 600 kc-s, 900 kc-s, 1200 kc-s, 1600 kc-s, in that order. To retune any one of them, (a) adjust iron core in Preset osc. coil until signal at desired frequency is heard; (b) adjust preset trimmer for max. output."
7 tubes: RF Amp; 1st Det; IF Amp; 2nd Det, 1st Audio, AVC; Audio Output; Rectifier; Tuning Eye tube. [Data sheets 95 and 96 do not give the actual tube types, they are only designated "V1" through "V7", except for the tuning eye tube which is a type 6U5.]
Sets with serial numbers 1 to approximately 325 had two additional components, C-27 and R-7, connected between contact 4 of the volume control and ground.
Sets with serial numbers 1891 and higher had a modification to increase sensitivity in the tuning eye circuit.

7002 97 I don't know what this one looks like.
AC model. Features 6 round pushbuttons, in a single row, for selection of:
1 - Phonograph; 2 - Radio; 3 - Silent; 4 - B.C. Band; 5 - SW 1 (11.5 to 23 MHz); 6 - SW 2 (5.8 to 12 MHz)
The "Silent" button muted the audio without having to change the volume nor wait for the filaments to heat up again.
All sets above serial number 240 had been modified to provide increased sensitivity of the tuning eye (target voltage changed from 255 to 97 volts).
It is unclear from the data sheets whether the phono unit is integrated with the radio set, or if it was an optional external unit. The Parts list for the 7002 (on Data Sheet 103) does have part numbes for the Record Changer (25 and 60 Hz versions), the Pickup, and separate numbers for spare motors.

Alignment for above (7001 and 7002) 96
B4000 (Baby Champ) 98 Battery operated version of the model 5000, "rainbow" cabinet, "propellor" dial pointer, "U"-shaped dial graphics. Band: BC.
Requires 2 @ 45 V "B" batteries in series, and one No. 6 dry cell "A" (1.5 V) battery. (Optional 3.5 ohm, 1/2 W series resistor installed if using a 2V "A" battery.)
External antenna.
4 tubes, types: Converter - 1A7GT; IF Amp - 1N5GT; 2nd Det, 1st Audio, AVC - 1H5GT; Output Amp - 1T5GT.
Colour options: Brown (bare bakelite) with dark brown knobs, or Ivory (painted) with white knobs.

B4002 99 Battery operated Radio-Phono set. Requires 2 @ 45 V "B" batteries in series, and one No. 6 dry cell "A" (1.5 V) battery. (Jumpers 55, 56 removed if using a 2V "A" battery.)
External antenna.
Probably resembles the model 5004. Schematic shows a pickup assembly for the phono section, but nothing about a turntable motor. Perhaps it was a wind-up spring-driven turntable?
4 tubes, types: Converter - 1A7GT; IF Amp - 1N5GT; 2nd Det, 1st Audio, AVC - 1H5GT; Output Amp - 3Q5GT.
A modification kit was available for "a small number of these sets sold before modification". One of the items is the 3Q5GT tube, which replaces a 1T5GT tube used for the output amp in early sets.

B4100 100 Battery operated, BC band, phono input. There is no third knob (shown on data sheet) to select radio/phono.
Requires 2 @ 45 V "B" batteries in series, and one No. 6 dry cell "A" (1.5 V) battery. (Optional 2.2 ohm, 1/2 W series resistor installed if using a 2V "A" battery.)
